Dr. Pastides is President Emeritus of the University of South Carolina, the state’s flagship system of eight institutions in 20 geographic locations. He served as its 28th president (2008-2019) and as interim president (May 2021- June 2022). Since arriving at the university in 1998, he has held the positions of vice president for research and health sciences and dean of the Arnold School of Public Health. Dr. Pastides has chaired the NCAA Division I board of Directors and served as the president of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). In 2016, he was one of seven Fulbright alumni to receive the inaugural Global Changemaker Award in recognition of his ongoing commitment to transform society and humanity through his work.
Dr. Pastides’ board service includes the U.S. Council on Competitiveness and Universities Research Association, and he chairs the Fulbright Program’s Council for the International Exchange of Scholars. He is on the Executive Committee of the Institute for International Education, is the only non-physician member of the board of Trustees of the American Medical Association and is on the national Uber Safety board. Dr. Pastides earned a Master of Public Health and PhD in Epidemiology from Yale University
He has served as an Advisor to BMP since stepping down from his Presidency.
